It Might Be Fluorosis — Here's What to Do If you've noticed chalky white patches, yellow mottling, or brown streaks on your teeth — or on your child's — you're not alone, and it's not simply a sign of poor brushing. Here in Jaipur, one of the most common reasons for these stains is dental fluorosis, caused by naturally high fluoride levels in our groundwater. This guide explains why it's so common in our area, how to tell fluorosis apart from ordinary staining, and what can actually be done about it.
Why fluorosis is so common in Jaipur
Rajasthan is one of India's worst-affected states for high fluoride in drinking water, and Jaipur is squarely in that zone. Much of the city's supply — especially from borewells and tubewells in and around outer localities — draws from groundwater that can carry fluoride well above the safe limit of 1.5 mg/L. Studies testing Jaipur's hand-pump and tubewell water have found fluoride levels many times higher than that limit, and research on Jaipur schoolchildren has found roughly a third showing some degree of dental fluorosis.
When children are exposed to too much fluoride while their adult teeth are still forming (roughly up to age 8), it changes how the enamel mineralises — leaving marks that appear once the teeth come through. That's why fluorosis often shows up as a "childhood" pattern of staining that a person carries into adulthood.
The key point for our patients: if you grew up in Jaipur or elsewhere in Rajasthan drinking borewell water, and you have these marks, fluorosis is a very likely explanation — and it's treatable.
How to tell fluorosis from ordinary stains
They're often confused, but they look and behave differently:
Dental fluorosis — symmetrical white flecks or patches, sometimes yellow-brown streaks or pitting, usually on several teeth at once and present since the adult teeth came in. It's inside the enamel, so brushing and normal cleaning won't remove it.
Surface (extrinsic) stains — from tea, coffee, tobacco, or Jaipur's hard water leaving tartar. These sit on the tooth, tend to be more uniform, and usually respond well to a professional scaling and polishing.
This distinction matters because the treatment is completely different — which is why a quick in-person check is worth far more than guessing from photos online.
What can be done about fluorosis stains
The good news: modern dentistry treats fluorosis staining very effectively, and the right option depends on how mild or severe it is.
Professional cleaning & polishing — first, we remove any surface stains and tartar on top, which sometimes makes a bigger difference than people expect (especially with Jaipur's hard-water tartar).
Teeth whitening — helps even out milder, lighter fluorosis in some cases.
Enamel microabrasion — gently polishes away very superficial white/brown marks.
Composite bonding — tooth-coloured resin sculpted over the marks; a conservative, single-visit option for moderate cases.
Dental veneers — thin custom shells that cover more noticeable brown streaks or pitting for a natural, lasting result.

Protecting your children's teeth from fluorosis
If you have young children, a few practical steps genuinely help:
Use a rice-grain-sized smear of toothpaste for under-3s and a pea-sized amount for ages 3–6, and supervise so they spit rather than swallow.
Get your home water's fluoride level checked if you rely on a borewell — and consider a suitable filter (RO or activated-alumina based) if it's high.
Bring children for early check-ups so we can spot and manage any developing fluorosis early, and apply protection where useful.
